Hike, walk or run along the beautiful Western Maryland Rail Trail, a 23-mile long paved path that follows the former Western Maryland Railway line. Chosen one of the top 12 trails in the United States for viewing fall foliage by the Rails to Trails Conservancy, the Western Maryland Rail Trail winds along the Potomac River through rolling farmland, woodlands, and rural towns, and offers many excellent opportunities for picturesque photography.
Hike the rugged terrain and mountainous trails through Potomac State Forest and climb Backbone Mountain. Enjoy a vacation filled with outdoor fun, beautiful natural landscapes and historical sites at North Point State Park on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Second largest of Maryland''s State Forests, Green Ridge State Forest consists of a 46,000-acre oak-hickory forest in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountain chain. Green Ridge offers a challenging 12-mile mountain bike trail with steady climbs, fast down hills and technical turns. The 24-mile Green Ridge hiking trail offers four day-hike options and backpacking shelters. Magnificent views of the surrounding landscape can be seen from Point Lookout, Banners, Logroll, Warrior Mountain and No Name Overlooks. The park also offers scenic overlooks, hunting areas, a rifle range, a boat launch, horse area and stocked fishing ponds. Cast your fishing lines in the Potomac River, White Sulphur and Orchard ponds, Town Creek, 15-Mile Creek and Sideling Hill Creek, which are stocked with trout each spring. With access to the Potomac River, Bond''s Landing is the perfect spot for boating and canoeing within the Forest. [
