Antietam National Battlefield

Well known for its role in American history, Antietam National Battlefield was established in 1890 to commemorate the bloodiest day of the Civil War when 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after 12 hours of savage combat on Sep. 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Located in the Great Valley region of the Appalachian Ridge, the battlefield encompasses 3,250 acres of farmland, pastures, woods and limestone forests. Take the self-guided 8.5 mile auto tour from Dunker Church through the historic battlefield and make 11 historic stops along the way.
